Jane Leavy, former sportswriter at the Washington Post, wrote the most famoius and acclaimed biography about the baseball immortal, from Sandy's boyhood in Brooklyn to a stint with the hometown team Dodgers, to his move to Los Angeles, where the wins and strikeouts were almost as impressive as the accolades and records. The book also covers Koufax's role in baseball's labor movement and his impact on and standing in the Jewish community. Structured around a retelling of Koufax's perfect game on September 9, 1965, the book was reluctantly approved by the notoriously shy Koufax with the understanding that he wouldn't be interviewed and would only verify information in the final draft. The book is largely based on the stories of those that knew him best. It's a must read for baseball fans. Hardcover, 288 pages. Harper Collins, 2002.
