Few professional basketball players measure up to the career of the legendary Red Klotz. Over a span of almost 80 years Klotz starred as a Philadelphia Public League guard at Southern High School, followed by a stellar collegiate career at Villanova University, leading to a spot on the 47-48 championship roster of the old Baltimore Bullets in the NBA. Marriage and fatherhood took Klotz off the road for a time, so he bounced around local leagues before signing on with Eddie Gottlieb's Philadelphia Sphas, a renowned pro team and frequent competitor of the Harlem Globetrotters. In the mid-1950s Globies owner Abe Saperstein convinced Klotz to form a travel team and for the next 70 years Red was the owner and player coach of the Jersey Reds, New York Nationals, Boston Shamrocks, Atlantic City Seagulls and the hapless Washington Generals. The wins against the Globetrotters were few and far between, but the stories from the road could fill volumes. Red Klotz saw it all and did it all in basketball, the only thing that alluded him was a rightful enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame. This book paints a vivid picture of the life of Red Klotz, a man who was in a league of his own.
