Vintage Shibe Park Tee
Vintage Shibe Park Tee
In 1909 Philadelphia Athletics president, Ben Shibe, moved his championship team from old Columbia Park to the magnificent new stadium at 21st & Lehigh. The stadium facade, know for its ornate French Renaissance style, was an architectural marvel unlike any other stadium of the time, nicknamed the "Baseball Palace." The A's had great teams in just about every decade, sandwiched between many not so great teams. The stadium opened with 23,000 seats, and added an additional 10,000 seats by 1930. Thousands more were able to watch the games from neighboring rooftops (at a price, of course), until Connie Mack dug in and built what was known as "the spite fence" in 1935, shutting off outside views forever. By that time the A's glory years were behind them and crowds dwindled. IN 1938 the Phillies became co-tenants of Shibe Park for financial reasons. After the 1954 season Mack's sons decided to sell the A's and the franchise moved to Kansas City. The Phillies remained and renamed Shibe as Connie Mack Stadium. Outside of their pennant winning 1950 season and trip to the World Series (shut out 4-0 by the NY Yankees), and an amazingly futile run in 1964, the Phillies languished in the rundown old stadium until 1970 after which it burned down and was razed. Besides baseball, many boxing matches took place at Shibe Park, and the Philadelphia Eagles played home games there in 1940 and 1942-1957. While the Philly teams had their ups and downs over the years, the real upside was fans got to see the legends of American and National League baseball, and NFL greats for many seasons. So, there was that! Our tees are preshrunk 100% ringspun cotton. Color: Old Skool Grey
